FORMAT FOR GRANT APPLICATIONS Page 1 INSTRUCTIONS FOR GRANT FORMAT:

The following pages provide a suggested format to apply for an Augusta – Aiken Audubon Grant. It is recommended that all grants use the suggested format or at least the cover sheet format. If using your own format, be sure to cover all categories.

All grants should be sent to the Augusta – Aiken Audubon Education Chair: Ruth Mead 1030 Northwood Road Augusta, GA 30903 or rmead@naturalsciencesacademy.org.

Grants must be received by October 29, 2010. Please note that we no longer accept faxed grants.

We are offering grants up to $350. It is possible that you might not need all $350. Let’s say you need 20 field guides for yourclassroom at a cost of $12 per field guide. You would only need to apply for $240. On the other hand, your project cost may be well over $350. If so, please mention where your will receive the additional funds. For example, you may have to solicit through PTSA or other school budget request or may even have the help of a local garden club.

If your grant covers birding optics such as binoculars, you may want to consider ordering from Eagle Optics. Eagle Optics offers matching funds for education so if you plan to order 20 binoculars, your grant would only need to request funding for 10 as Eagle Optics would cover the other 10.

Call Eagle Optics at 1-800-289-1132 for more information or visit their website at http://www.eagleoptics.com

Digital cameras will not be funded.

Following the Grant Format is a SAMPLE GRANT APPLICATION that details what should be included under each category.

The grant cover sheet and continuation sheets (pages 2-4) can be copied from the webpage and pasted into your word processor to serve as a template for your grant application. Before pasting into your word processor, set the margins of the word processor pages to 0.4 inch or less to accommodate the width of the grant application pages.

HAPPY TEACHING!

CLASSROOM ALIVE!
Ø Project Summary (The project summary should include a brief description of the project in ONE TO THREE PARAGRAPHS. This summary should include the need for the project, the purpose of the project, the target group, as well as a brief description.) Many students learn best when involved in ‘hands on’ projects which help bring visual meaning to the pages in the text books. This project will provide that hands onlearning for the forth grade class at Birdlife Elementary. The student curriculum for forth grade includes an understanding of an organism’s basic needs for survival within their living habitat as well as an understanding of life cycles including metamorphoses. In this project the students will set up a ‘living classroom’ that will includes habitat for butterfly larvae as well as an underground see-through habitat for an earthworm colony. The students will be responsible for recording observations on the life of both the earth worm and the butterfly, will produce a creative writing on their findings, and will be responsible for maintaining their living classroom. (Please elaborate with as much detail information as you wish. This sample is only to give you an idea of what we would like to see in a grant application.) Ø Project Goals (The goal category should list what this project should accomplish. It should include a brief description of what the students will learn, what skills will be enhanced, and what long term benefits the project will accomplish. Use the objective category to list the detail and specific goals such as curriculum standard to be met.)This project will create a living classroom in the Birdlife 4th Grade Class. This living classroom will enhance learning skills by bring an exciting component to the classroom. The students will gain a sense of pride in their work to actively establish and maintain a living classroom. Students will increase their knowledge of scientific principles, investigation, observation, and creative writing skills. Through the Classroom Alive! project environmental education concepts will be introduced to the students. The students should gain a sense of environmental stewardship as well as an appreciation of our natural world.

Ø	Project Objectives

(The objective category should include specific goals. It should list
exactly what skills and concepts the student will learn. This is a
good place to list any curriculum standards that hope to be met.
Be specific!)

Students will increase their knowledge of scientific principles by
studying and observing the life cycle of a butterfly and life within an
earthworm colony. Students will enhance their creative writing skills
by creating a paper abouttheir living classroom observations, learning,
and experiences.Students will gain an understanding of the process
of metamorphoses through their studyof the butterfly.

Students will cover the following Birdlife Curriculum Standards:

Birdlife Standard 1: Student learns to ask questions, makes and
keeps records of observations, classifies, communicates with others,
and designs a simple experiment.

Birdlife Standard 9:Student learns that organisms have basic needs
and can survive only in environments in which their needs can be met.

Birdlife Standard 3: Student identify and practice accepted safety
procedures in manipulating science materials and equipment.

Birdlife Standard 15: Student understands that humans change
environments in ways that can be either beneficial or detrimental for
themselves and other organisms.

Birdlife Standard 22: Student understands the process of
metamorphoses and can list the changes in the life cycle
of both complete and incomplete metamorphoses.

(It is not necessary to include curriculum standards but it should prove
most helpful in making sure these standards are being met and
justifying your project.)

Ø	Project Time Line
(The time line should include a framework for accomplishing the project.
It should include items such as when the materials will be purchased,
when the learning units will be presented, beginning and completion
times, set up dates, and evaluation timeframe.)

November 2010: Grant funded

November - December 2010: Materials purchased and set up of indoor
classroom butterfly and earthworm habitats. Standards 1, 9, & 3 covered.

January 2011: Live animals introduced to the habitats.

January – April 2011: Conduct classroom alive observations and
maintenance and record all work. Standards 1, 15, & 22 covered.

April – May 2011: Write paper on the experience and evaluate project.

(It might be helpful to be more detailed than the above sample in order
to stay on schedule and insure meeting all goals.)
